The Challenge

For decades, online home search has forced buyers to think like database administrators — selecting from dropdown menus, setting exact square footage ranges, and drawing rigid map boundaries. This one-size-fits-all approach created enormous friction: buyers struggled to articulate nuanced preferences like 'good natural light' or 'cottage-like feel' through static filters, and agents had no way to understand the full context of what a buyer truly wanted. Redfin, serving millions of homebuyers across the U.S., recognized that this filter-based paradigm was leaving enormous value on the table — buyers were missing homes that matched their real preferences, and Redfin was missing opportunities to connect them with agents and services.

The Solution

In November 2025, Redfin launched a first-of-its-kind conversational AI home search experience, built in partnership with Sierra — an AI platform co-founded by Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor. The system replaces traditional filters entirely: the conversation itself becomes the interface. Buyers describe what they want in their own words, and the AI engages in a back-and-forth dialogue to refine results across millions of listings in real time. The AI understands fuzzy, human concepts — 'I want a modern kitchen,' 'I care more about overall space than bedroom count,' 'show me something with a cottage-like feel' — and translates them into precise property matches. When a buyer's criteria can't be met (e.g., a $300k home in a premium neighborhood with a long wish list), the AI proactively suggests adjustments like expanding the search radius or relaxing specific requirements. The system supports multilingual queries, integrates with Redfin's existing tools including Redfin Estimate, Ask Redfin, and Buying Power, and learns from real conversations daily to continuously improve its understanding of buyer intent. The platform launched on Redfin.com and mobile web, with iOS app support added in December 2025.
